The things I have discovered through my epilepsy.

I have been diagnosed with epilepsy for almost ten years now. It has been a rollercoaster ride with more dips than highs but it has also made me the stronger person that I am today. No one really thinks much of epilepsy. I mean it is not like cancer is it? A person’s life is not put at risk because of it. There was a time when I thought in the same way. In fact I didn’t really know much about epilepsy until I experienced it for myself. Below is a list of things that I have known only through my epilepsy.

1) I have become more creative. I always love to write poetry but that was about it. Having epilepsy has taken my creativity to new levels. In fact this burning creativity is one of the reasons I have decided to start this blog; to take the reader on my journey as I try new creative things. I now love baking, painting, knitting, jewellery making, paper crafts.

2) After a seizure there is a period where I feel deep empathy and it sometimes frightens me. I can feel the pain and loneliness of others more than happiness. It is as if I am drowning in this sea of energy.

3) I can sometimes smell things that are not there and these always seem to be beautiful scents like floral perfumes, the smell of baking bread or things like lemon cake.

4) After a seizure there is a period where I go into a trance like state and I never remember what I said or did during that time.
